Since 1936, Bysonderheid Has Been More Than a Farm.
Some places become part of your family.
For us, that place is Bysonderheid.
Nestled in the Limpopo bushveld, Bysonderheid has been home to three generations of our family for almost ninety years. Every fence, every pasture and every sunset carries a story of those who came before us and the responsibility we have to those who will follow.
Our journey began in 1936, when my grandparents purchased two adjoining portions of the farm Monque on Molino. They named them Bysonderheid and Vooruitsig, never imagining that these two pieces of land would shape our family's future for generations.
From those early days, the farm became more than a business. It became home.
Four Generations on the Same Land
My grandparents raised three children on the farm: Francois, Marietjie and my father, Johan.
Like many farm children of that era, they learned life through the rhythm of the seasons—working cattle, fixing fences, repairing equipment and understanding that the land provides only when it is respected.
After completing his apprenticeship in Pretoria, my father returned home to farm alongside my grandfather. Together they worked the land until my grandparents retired in 1984, when my father took over the farm and continued the family legacy.
In later years, the neighbouring portion, Vooruitsig, was sold, leaving the remaining 176 hectares of Bysonderheid as the heart of our family farm.
Growing Up on Bysonderheid
I was born in 1976, and together with my younger sister, Natasia, we were fortunate enough to spend our childhood growing up here.
Some of my earliest memories are of endless bushveld days, cattle grazing quietly in the distance, fixing fences with my father, watching thunderstorms roll across the horizon and learning that farming isn't simply an occupation—it's a way of life.
Like many young people raised on farms, I couldn't wait to leave after school.
I believed my future lay somewhere beyond the farm gates.
Life took me in different directions.
But no matter where I went, farming never stopped calling me home.
Looking back now, I realise something simple:
You can leave a farm, but sometimes the farm never leaves you.
A New Chapter Begins
When my father passed away in 2021, I returned to Bysonderheid with a renewed sense of responsibility.
Not simply to continue farming.
But to continue a family legacy that had already spanned nearly ninety years.
Rebuilding the farm has been both rewarding and humbling.
Like every South African farmer, we've experienced changing markets, unpredictable weather, rising costs and countless unexpected challenges.
Each obstacle has forced us to ask an important question:
How do we build a farm that will still be thriving for the next generation?
Farming With Nature
Several years ago I discovered the work of Allan Savory and regenerative agriculture.
His philosophy challenged many of the traditional ideas I'd grown up with.
Instead of trying to control nature, regenerative farming teaches us to work alongside it.
We introduced rotational grazing, focused on improving soil health and began managing the land in a way that allows nature to recover rather than simply produce.
The results have been remarkable.
Healthier pastures.
Improved soil.
More biodiversity.
Stronger cattle.
Every season reminds us that when we care for the land, the land takes care of us.
Today we continue building a carefully selected Bonsmara herd while introducing Boran genetics to strengthen the future of our breeding programme.
Our goal isn't simply to produce exceptional cattle.
Our goal is to leave this farm healthier than we found it.
Why Bysonderheid Exists
As the farm improved, another thought kept returning.
Modern families have become disconnected from their food.
Most people don't know where their beef comes from.
They've never met the farmer.
They've never seen the pastures.
They've never followed the journey from veld to table.
We wanted to change that.
Instead of producing anonymous food that disappears into a supply chain, we wanted to build relationships directly with the families who enjoy it.
Bysonderheid Reserve Beef is simply the beginning.
In time we hope to share lamb, hay, future farm products and authentic farm experiences with a community that values transparency, sustainability and genuine relationships.
