Farm-to-Fork Beef in South Africa | Bysonderheid

What Does Farm-to-Fork Beef Actually Mean?

There was a time when knowing where your food came from was completely normal.

You knew the farmer who grew the vegetables. You knew where the milk came from. And when there was beef on the Sunday lunch table, chances were good that someone in the family knew exactly where that animal had been raised.

Somewhere along the way, we lost that connection.

Today, most beef travels through a long chain before it reaches your freezer. The animal may be raised on one farm, sold at an auction, transported elsewhere, finished in a feedlot, slaughtered, processed and eventually sold through a retailer.

By the time you pick up that packet of beef, the farm it came from is often impossible to know.

At Bysonderheid, we want to do things a little differently.

Bringing the farm and the family back together

For us, farm-to-fork is not simply a fashionable phrase.

It means shortening the distance between the family producing the food and the family eating it.

Our cattle spend their lives on the farm, grazing the veld and pastures we work hard to look after.

We know the animals.

We know the camps they grazed.

We know what they were fed.

And we know how they were cared for.

When one of those animals eventually becomes beef for another family's freezer, we want that family to know the story too.

Why does that matter?

Because food becomes very different when you know where it came from.

A steak isn't simply something wrapped in plastic anymore.

There is land behind it.

There is rainfall behind it.

There are early mornings, broken fences, dry seasons, green summers and countless hours of work behind it.

Most importantly, there are families on both sides.

Our family raised the animal.

Your family shares the meal.

Farm-to-fork isn't about being fancy

We don't believe good beef needs a complicated story.

It needs an honest one.

Raise cattle well. Look after the soil and grass that feed them. Treat the animals properly. Process the beef responsibly. And give people the opportunity to know where their food came from.

That's really what farm-to-fork means to us.

Perhaps we're simply returning to the way food used to work.

And we think there is something rather special about that.

From our farm to your family's table.

Johan Lottering

Johan Lottering is a third-generation farmer and the steward of Bysonderheid Farm, a family-owned farm in Limpopo, South Africa, that has been in the Lottering family since 1936. After spending many years building businesses outside of agriculture, Johan returned to the farm following the passing of his father in 2021. Since then, he has been rebuilding Bysonderheid with a focus on regenerative farming, responsible livestock management and creating a direct relationship between the farmer and the families who enjoy the food the farm produces. His passion lies in restoring healthy soils, improving grazing systems and building a sustainable Bonsmara breeding herd strengthened with Boran genetics. Through the Bysonderheid Knowledge Centre and Farm Journal, Johan shares practical insights into regenerative agriculture, premium beef production and the everyday realities of managing a modern South African family farm. His philosophy is simple: "We don't believe food should be anonymous. Every family deserves to know where their food was raised, who cared for it, and the land that made it possible." When he's not on the farm, Johan is an entrepreneur with interests in digital technology, healthcare innovation and helping businesses build meaningful communities through technology and education. Through Bysonderheid, he hopes to reconnect people with their food, preserve a family legacy spanning almost ninety years, and leave the land healthier for the generations still to come.
